Advice, Support and Training

Norfolk Rural Business Advice Service provides practical business support and information to farmers and other rural businesses. Their website provides information on grants, events and other sources of advice and support.

Produced in Norfolk is a producers’ co-operative, promoting food and craft products genuinely made in the county. Support is provided to members in reaching customers, networking and developing supply chains.

Tastes of Anglia is the East of England’s regional food group, promoting the food and drink of Norfolk, Suffolk, Essex, Cambridgeshire, Bedfordshire and Hertfordshire. Marketing support is provided to members and Tastes of Anglia Table distributes produce across the region.

Norfolk County Council’s Economic Development Unit works to make a real impact on the Norfolk economy to encourage its businesses and help the people who live and work here to maximise their potential. The unit plays a leading role in Shaping the Future (www.shaping-the-future.org), a private and public sector partnership to develop the economy of Norfolk.

Business Link for Norfolk provide a wide range of advice to business, through their comprehensive website, specialist training and events.

WEETU, the Women’s Employment, Enterprise and Training Unit, assists women in Norfolk and Waveney to develop their economic prospects and to improve access to the local labour market through the provision of high quality employment and enterprise support services.

FWAG, the Farming and Wildlife Advisory Group, provides farmers, landowners and others with the best opportunity for environmental gain through cost effective, quality solutions.

LEAF, Linking Environment And Farming, help farmers to adopt Integrated Crop Management, through demonstration farms, advice and information.

Regulatory

Trading Standards departments aim to prevent consumer problems arising and to put them right where they do. Specific responsibilities range from trade descriptions to animal health and welfare. The central website has advice and guidance for businesses and consumers. In Norfolk, the service is delivered by Norfolk County Council

Environmental Health departments are responsible for issues affecting living conditions, including food safety and hygiene. In Norfolk, the service is delivered by the district councils. The Chartered Institute of Environmental Health publishes advice and guidance.
Planning (including outdoor advertising) is also the responsibility of the district council. The Planning Portal provides detailed guidance on the regulations. Planning issues may also involve the County Council Road and Highways department.

FARMA, the National Farmers' Retail & Markets Association, supports and accredits farm shops and farmers’ markets as selling genuinely local food. Accredited shops and markets are listed on their website.

RSA, the Rural Shops Alliance, is a national association of village shops. The RSA aims to support, advise, encourage and lobby on behalf of rural retailers to become more proactive and professional.

ACS, the Association of Convenience Stores, is the retail trade association for the UK convenience store sector, representing over 32,000 shops. ACS lobbies on behalf of its members and provides advice and support.

NFU, the National Farmers’ Union, represents the farmers and growers of England and Wales. Its central objective is to promote successful and socially responsible agriculture and horticulture, while ensuring the long term viability of rural communities.

farm, “the independent voice of farmers”, is a campaign group, fighting for a sustainable future for farming in the UK. As a network of sustainable farming activists, uniting farmers, consumers and environmentalists, farm delivers national public-engaging campaigns on farming issues.
