With holidays and illness I've only just caught up with this. Went round today and photographed the new "Norfolk Nick".

Hi Leo, hope you have enjoyed your holiday and have recouperated sufficiently. Thanks for your splendid help with your extensive picture library, I hope many people are making good use of it.
I have just bought a lump of stone for this coming Sundays carving exhibition in Claxton, the Fair on the Yare, complete with mystery guest, nature walk with Mark Cocker ( he writes in the Guardian ever so often about things natural) music, dance, reed cutting etc. etc. plus your usual assembly of stalls. Starts at 1pm till 4pmish.

Re: Goblin face on Castle Meadow
I went for another look today, and he is still safe and well.

I took a photo

http://www.facebook.com/photo.php?pid=2985745&l=e93f9c7c82&id=599652099

and noticed that the bricks above the goblin are a different colour in a V shape beneath the window sill. Looking closely at the picture, I can't see any signs of repointing, although the mortar looks lighter in colour.

Just speculating - the sill is green with algae & is in bad repair (there is loss of mortar between a couple of bricks). I wonder if water had been soaking the wall above the original Nick, and had rusted the attaching spike so that he simply fell off . Who knows what may have happened to him then ( may be buried in mud beneath the window!)

We should probably check for water damage when the rains come..

I shan't look at the photo as I loathe facebook, but its a fair point. T
his little bit of Victorian trivia has l;asted over a hundred years I guess. Don't know whether 'Nick'will survive it that long, todays hazards from high kicking teenagers and the inebriates which flow through that area of Norwich at the weekend are extra modern hazards more likely to have a go at ol' Nick than the water. I'm not much worried about it. nevermind

Yes Leo30, I have also noted that some scrot has found affinity with Nick and stole him
The next version, this time with two ankers into the wall, is already in the production line, he will be replaced before the end of the year, and the next time some idiot tries to nick it, he will damage the plaque rather than getting away with it.

Its not a problem to make another one, I have the mould. What is coming through with clarity is certain though, revellers frequenting the open air vomitarium just cannot control themselves, binge drinking is out of control and there is no control over behaviour during certain times of the evening, mostly earlier one, between 7and 10pm.
Binge drinking in these dens of inequity is nothing but irresponsible drug taking and the clubs who sell alcohol to already drunk young people, are commiting a crime, imho. I agree with prof. Nutts report, alcohol is so much more dangerous than other drugs, any A&E will agree. nevermind

I'm so glad you're making another Norfolk Nick! I work in the Shirehall building so I walk past him most days - I was quite upset to see he'd been pinched yet again. You should booby trap the new one so anyone who tries to pull him off the wall gets a nasty surprise. Squirt of cold water to the face perhaps?

Thanks braindeer, it was always planned that I renew him when he gets stolen. I would like to offer him up to tourists if anyone would like to advance the argument inside Shirehall,Wink [;)], at least they could not nick Nick off the wall of the Shriehall tourist office, could they? nevermind

Re: Goblin face on Castle Meadow

Glad to hear another is in the works Nevermind.  You did predict that it might disappear.  Thank Goodness you did not put the stone carving on the Shirehall as I wanted.  We must live with the reality of the times I guess.

Good on ya !

Yes MKJ, that just shows that the face was missing.  My comment was aimed at establishing that it had been stolen, it may have been removed for a legitimate reason.

It has just been put up, Flange, with legitamit reason, so whatever has happened does not matter much, it will be replaced with another copy. As Matty said, we envisaged such primitve urges and nobody will ever get the original, just copies.

BTW. you can have one if you like, they are for sale. nevermind

Goblin 2 has been pulled out of the mould this morning, he's now drying for a few days and then he will be put back where he was taken from. nevermind
