Confused [*-)] SHREDDED PAPER

Recently an aquantance who runs a business was told by the dustmen that she should not put shredded paper in to the recycling as they could not take it.  In these days of identity theft with people rummaging around for personal details etc what are we expected to do?

As I live near the Mile Cross Recycling centre I take my shredded paper there and put it in the cardboard section as advised by one of the men working there the first time I took some there.  I find it a good idea to take it in an unwanted cardboard box so I can just sling the lot over the wall.

I forgot to mention in my previous post the recycling depot don't like you to have the shredded paper in plastic bags - which is why I suggested putting it in cardboard boxes.    if you don't have any spare boxes the paper will just have to be tipped out of any plastic bags it is in when putting it in the cardboard recycling section.

If your loo is not on a meter, just keep flushing it bit by bit until it has all gone.

Re: SHREDDED PAPER

With regard to shredded paper, I asked this same question to Breckland Council Recycling Dept.  Yes it's true, you cannot put shredded paper into the recycling bin as it cloggs up the sorting machinery when it's at the recycling depot. The same goes for cans. If you crush them to make more space in your bin, this is a big No No. Apparently, crushed cans fall through the machinery rollers, so leave them in their natural state.

There was a whole list of other things which they said were un-desirable for the recycling bin. Off the top of my head, two of them were, envelopes (the glue contaminates the paper) andgreetings cards, again the covering contamnates the paper.

By all means keep on shredding doccuments ,but bag it & bin it in the normal bin or in a shredded paper bank at the recycling centre.

There is nothing like the council giving us sensible and consistent advice on how they would like us to dispose of items of waste.

And so far we have had nothing like the council giving us sensible and consistent advice on how they would like us to dispose of items of waste.

I find that putting shredded paper inside empty weetabix boxes is just enough disguise to foil the environmental police.  Of course empty cornflake boxes etc will be just as effective.

I have also heard this and it seems ludicrous to me that this is the case.  There are many specialised companies who will take confidential waste and there are also many products available to put this waste in.  Look at www.biosack.co.uk

I heard in the pub that there is a firm that will convert (for a nominal charge) your confidential waste into prefabricated homes for homeless people.
