My third week in the Czech Republic and a visit to the local Post Office is required - my Czech bank card has been sent. For some reason, the postperson couldn't just stick it through the letterbox. A notice was left telling me to present myself at the local Post Office with my passport as proof of ID, needed to collect my letter. This I duly did, thinking a post - breakfast walk would be pleasant and healthy.
As the post office is a ten-minute walk away, I decided to clamp my I-Pod to my ear to make the trip more enjoyable. Sensible move. I queued for almost the first act of La Boheme only to be told I was in the wrong queue and to present myself at another counter - and of course to join another queue.
Act One of La Boheme ended as I was told, yes, I was in the right queue, but 'come back at 4 p.m.' Summoning up my rather inadequate (as yet) Czech, I enquired 'Proc?' (Why?) only to be answered with a stream of totally incomprehensible Czech sentences. I walked back reflecting that some things don't change much, wherever you are in the world.
Getting used to the Czech diet is much easier for me than for my partner, who is vegetarian. Plus I'm a great fan of any beer and dumpling-based cuisine. A visit to Tesco, of which there are many in the Czech Republic, didn't yield much in the way of veggie food. Fortunately vegetables of all kinds are plentiful and tasty. Czech bread is superb, chewy, tasty and comes in many different varieties. And the beer is of course excellent.
We are into the process of buying a car - more about that next time. We are also off to register, something we don't have to do as EU citizens, but advisable as life is infinitely easier here with some official Czech document stating that you exist.
I shall now prepare myself for my first journey back to the UK, leaving tomorrow a.m. and returning home on Tuesday evening.
And yes, already I think of the Czech Republic as 'home'. " src="/cs/emoticons/emotion-58.gif">
