Well. thanks to LeoL30, Nevermind and Matty, we can reinstate an obscure (and to some, a loved) Norwich feature -great stuff! I'm only sorry that we haven't, as yet found out anything about its history ( a plague upon the cur who removed it..).
Hopefully, we shall find out some details, and I'd be surprised if it didn't have a local name, so until that is revealed, I'm thinking Norwich (or Norfolk) Nick Doe.

i like Nick Doe, it has a ring to it, what do others say any more suggestions or shall we start the voting?
OK, lets say today 3pm the voting starts until Monday 3pm. Can't be bothered to set up a poll here, I'll rather go and do some digging. nevermind

I have a sneaky suspicion that he should have a Jewish name but that would need a lot of research.

I will vote " Norfolk Nick " with "recaptured" or not.
And may I make a request to the EDP. Is there a chance that you would consider a small article in the newspaper requesting any information regarding the Shire Hall Golblin face ( allowing for the fact that we are calling it a Goblin). Or would a letter to the Editor garner as much. ?.
What is the real name for this smiling face, is it a goblin as Keith queried ? . And strawman has an excellent idea about finding out a bit of it's history. Come to that I would love to know more about the orignal concept. About what period would the Shire Hall face have been placed in the first place, or are guessing.. Perhaps the Museum would be able to have a look at the original plans. It is amazing what they have preserved and the architectural drawings may be in the archives somewhere. Where there is a wil there is a way. Some old codger may well be in possession of this info.
Hopefully, it will make the everyday Norfolk person look around and see the lovely architecture we all take for granted. When you leave, as I and so many others have done, you realise what you did not bother to take in, the Heritage is so important..
And could some kind person take a photo of the wall and the hole showing the missing face so that we can compare when we get the new face on.
Good on ya folks, Matty

I think that we would have to consult Norwich City historical records, the EDP has already looked up their archive.
Another avenue could be the prison history record, if there is such a thing. Maybe it was a Victorian spleen, who knows, we started the ball rolling, sooner or later someone will pipe up with more info.
I am looking at two bits of stone at present, the longer I look the more I'll pitch for one or the other.
I am happy with Matty's choice, Norfolk Nick. Thats two of us. nevermind

Thanks leoL30 for posting the blank behind the face. I have been studying the picture clopsely and looking at Narfulk Nicks hat, draped at an angle and giving the whole face a character that the other two Gopblins don't have, he has a lively appearance, I am wondering whether at one time his hat had a peaky end to it leaning over to the left when looking at5 it, what do other think, it looks a little to me as if it has broken off at one time.
If this is the case, then we have to make a decision to, either leave him with the sort of bobble hat he looks like havin', or alternatively, carve it so it appears to lean leftish and give it a slighly pointy end to it.
What do others think?, especially those who have high resolution screens, mine is an old Dell Trinitron, its not that good any more, you might see it even better. Let us know, so we can make a decision on this before we start carving. nevermind

dear Matty, started carving today, after yesterdays copying into the right size as originally carved.
I shall take a few photos tonight.
Now that I started and wanted to communicate with those interested on here, the Mods have hidden the private messages thread, I don't know why, but it will not deter us.
I shall send you some pictures of the project soon and I am meeting Strawman tommorrow for a chat. nevermind

Pictures from Nevermind:

He also adds the following message: Here are the first two pictures of the little critter,
thanks to the webteam for their assistance in posting them.
Now you might remember the original size, top to bottom
was 13.5 inches, side to side 9 inches.
I started with hanging a white piece of paper on to the
wall at chest height, my friends projector took the original off the computer
and projected it on to the wall, I adjusted it until it fit into the measured
lines on the paper, then copied the most important features, which are my first
sketch in picture 1, its overlayed on to the stone, you can see the stone
peaking out at the top left corner.
The second picture, I have highlighted the outline which
is carved down by about 1/4inch, so I can get my bearings
right.
I will meet strawman and hopefully Leo today and show
him the sketch and have a chat about it. Happy birthday Goblin. nevermind

"or the stall owner in the Market in Norwich"
Oh my God. Clouds of steam from the tea urn, walk down the slope and see old Norfolk chaps gumming a chip butty as their offspring loom out from the clouds of fug, character-filled faces of the Norfolk Diehards. I swear the Orcs in LOTR were based on the bods you see in Norwich market, and I mean that in a loving way.

Thanks Vince. That is a Norfolk Smile if ever there was one Nevermind. Reminds me of the old fishermen in Sheringham, or the stall owner in the Market in Norwich, who always had that glint in their eye when they told the fishing yarns, or was peddling their wares. . One eyebrow raised !!!.
Very much appreciated everyone.

Thanks Matty and Newtyres for approving his leery smile, he has something that draws you to him as much as repells you, lets hope I can recarve a little of both. Yesterday I took the outline down to about 1 inch, the next step is to carve the hat rim and bridge of his nose, to get a reference for the next highest points on his face, the cheeks and parts of his beart and to connect the face to the hat, so to speak.
This is the first time I have talked a project through and taken pictures as its happening, so please bear with me, should I not post daily than that is due to other commitments.
Its a little carving course, gratis.
Its raining and I am working outside for dust reasons, so there'll be no chiselling today, I think.
I have met up with strawman yesterday and we had a chat about the project and how Leo has been taking and collecting pictures for years. Strawman copied some photographic pictures, which helps as I have to make up the hight of the relief, something you cannot see from a photo.
I am very much looking forward to get this done and put back into its rightfull place. nevermind

Hasn't he just, without his pictures, we could not have gone ahead.
Today at 11 am, after two years of getting about it, the Goblin, so kindly sponsored by Matty, was re-instated to its rightfull place on Shirehall prison wall, now the Shirehall museum.
What had started as a mad globe spanning idea here online, has been taken to another level, finished and put back were it belongs.
My thanks to all, to Leo for the Photos, Andy and Chandos for keeping me sane with the odd real ale, to Matty for the patience shown and overall sponsorship, to NPS, Norwich CC, Nofolk CC and Landscapes and Heritage for coming along today and giving their approval to this community led re instatement..
Thanks as well for Adrian Judd and Tracey from the Evening News for coming along on this sunny morning, with some chance the pics of it will appear in tommorrows paper.
Hopefully, in future one can order copies of the Goblin in the Shirehall museum, I still have to set up arrangements.
It was fun. ![Cool [H]](/CS/emoticons/emotion-11.gif) nevermind
