Now I'm prevented from taking household rubbish to the dump, I separate all cardboard, paper and polystyrene blocks, and just burn 'em up. Saves no end of space in my wheelie bin.
Where is Ali's Snackbar anyway?

| Quote: the ridiculous policies of what can and cant be taken to the local dumps is responsible for a massive increase in fly tipping. Surely the highly paid people in the county council must be able to see ... |
|
My thoughts exactly! In the summer I removed about 4-5 aquare metres, about 3-5cm deep of grass/soil (which isn't alot really) from my front garden. This soil took up about 7-8 bubble sacks. I took the bags to the recycling centre in my Dad's car and was told that I could only dispose of 3 bags, well I guess that would be a garden of about 2m sq!! So if you have a garden that is over 2m sq and you want to get rid of some soil, you're stumped Admittedly I don't really know what happens to soil and rubble that gets dumped, is it recycled somehow? Anyway like Zafeira ... said, is it a wonder there's so much fly tipping going on. On another note, it is just a few weeks ago that Norwich City Council have accepted cans in their recycling boxes, well can recycling has been going on for years. In fact in Norwich I'm sure (correct me if I'm wrong) we have had the recycling boxes for only about a year, or less? Come on NCC get with it!!

Why didn't you simply relocate the soil behind the shed in the back
garden...out of sight, out of mind. Just think of all that wasted
fuel used by people moving little piles of soil from one place to
another, what a waste of time not to mention global
warming. You bought your house including a garden containing
muck, so you keep it?

Surely if someone has taken the time and effort to try and 'keep britain tidy' by taking rubbish to a designated dump, they should, irrespective of who they are, what vehicle they are using or what time of day or day of the week they turn up, be able to deposit the rubbish.
I understand that some of the nonsense rules imposed by the recycling centres are in place to stop traders from dumping waste, however, there are 2 points of note here.
1: Most traders, if they are serious about their business don't have the time nor the inclination to load up their van, truck or whatever and go to the tip. It simply isn't economically viable. Hire a skip, £70 - £100 or waste a day running a pickup truck to and from the tip - £100 labour plus the cost of running a vehicle.
2: Much of the rubbish from a traders site is recyclable anyway, hardcore, wood, cardboard, metal, even some plastic, so if it goes to a recycling centre, then so much the better.
So, here's a bit of an idea. Although we already pay for our rubbish disposal, let's make a nominal fee of £1 for anyone to dump anything of any size at a dump. All the £1s go to paying for an extra bod or two to help sort out the recycling from the plain rubbish and hey presto fly tipping is a thing of the past, recycling is up, costs are down, profits are up, hooray!
The idea needs a bit more refining. Vehicle size could be limited to 20' * 6'6" * 7'6" high to allow small vans, and cars with trailers in to a site, but to keep trucks and skip lorries out, these would still have to pay proper commercial rates, but the limit on vehicle size would still mean the economic balance for most traders is still in favour of using a skip.
So is this idea workable or have I gone wrong here? Perhaps it takes a radical idea to resolve a simple problem.

No, I'm not winding you up. I don't have that much expanded polystyrene anyway, most of the time, but for example I bought a new computer system just after Christmas, and the blocks would have almost filled my wheelie bin on their own. In my incinerator they burned to nothing in a couple of minutes, no residue, problem solved.
Maybe I'd be careful which way the wind was blowing if I lived in a built-up area, but living in the sticks I have a bit more freedom. Having said that, polystyrene blocks don't produce any smuts, and the smoke rises rapidly out of anyone's way. I'd rather not burn it of course, but when I'm told I have to pay extra for someone to dispose of it for me, then the decision is rather taken out of my hands!

Cantley Canary, I'm curious why you were prevented from taking computer packaging to the dump!
When I bought this computer and peripherals in February 2004 I had to dispose of three large boxes, plastic sheeting and loads of polystyrene! I just took the lot to our local recycling centre and disposed of the various types of packaging in the relevant bits in the centre!
