Old Shool ex-Hewett Scholars'62-67 Catering College at Norwich 67-69

Is anybody(one ) out there.? I'm trying to find those who quite innocently spent some of their most happiest moments at the renowned Hewett School through the years posted above. If anyone is brave enough to admit to this fact then please E-mail me and I will respond accordingly. And remember Non  Nobis Dominae .I have a feeling I've spelt that incorrectly

.                     Yours , from Conisford House.......... Peter G   P.s. Does any person remember Jack Adams taking a history class and banging 3 guys heads into a wall? Or a gym teacher being caught with the "head girl"

Left in 62 Peter. Joined when it was the Norwich Technical Grammar School housed on Ipswich Road (now City College Norwich). I liked it there much better than the Hall Road site.

I remember well the notorious Jack Adams! I recall three or four of the larger sportier lads jumping him as he entered the class for English one time. He disappeared under the flurry of bodies into which others also dived. Jack came up though, red-faced and as wild as a boar with migraine and sorted out the main protagonists, who went off for a caning from the Headmaster (Hesketh?).

Other stories of Jack which I cannot publish here - for fear of incriminating myself and others, and also Jack himself.

I also remember Floyd, the German teacher with the very loud pin-striped suit. And Gretten the sadistic Metalwork teacher.

Forgotten a lot of them now. Who was the physics master who used to stand and sway from side to side the whole lesson, with a cushion clutched against his back. Think we called him Ben - could have been Burgess.

Most of the teachers were rotten and I mostly hated it there. There was one, Mr Derbyshire, the Woodwork master. Decent chap. Everyone liked and respected him.

Anyone out there from pre-1962? Anyone remember Terence Stygall? Great character.

Ah . . . memories . . .

Hi there, My name is Terence Stygall and I was at the Hewett between 1957 and 1964. Yes I remember Jack Adams and "Spike" Floyd very well. The masters I remember best are the ones who resorted to ritual corporal punishment, each with his own special implement. With Floyd it was the wooden ruler over the knuckles while Gretten selected from an armory of a metal ruler, a T square and a wooden board duster which he used as a projectile. His enthusiasm in this area sticks in my memory. The history teacher Fenwick used a slipper while Jack Adams preferred a more low tech belt around the side of the head with the flat of his hand (no concerns about brain damage in those days). Most of the masters are probably dead by now. One I particularly liked was Mr Norris who taught english lit. He died relatively young in 1984. Nice guy. Controlled his classes without using violence. Yes, the physics master was Ben Burgess. Like many very tall people, he had back problems and needed his cusion whenever he sat down.

I left in 1964 for London and then Bristol. I've been in Bristol since 1968 lecturing in biochemistry at the University of the West of England. Say, does anyone remember a pupil called Ambury Hall. We were good friends but I lost touch after he emigrated to New Zealand. It's a bit of a long shot I know, but someone might have heard from him.

Please feel free to get in touch. My e-mail adress is t.stygall@hotmail.co.uk.

All the best,

Terry Stygall

Good grief Terence: it took you a year to respond to my post and it's taken me almost another year to respond to yours.

Have accepted your invitation and sent you an email.

On our past form I shall expect a reply in 2008.

Cheers . . . Chandos 5R, 1957-62

Hi Peter.

I'm out here. Hewett '64-'69 so probably a couple of years younger than you. Don't remember you personally although the name seems familiar.
Now living in Milton Keynes and about to emigrate to the US.

NON nobis Domine!
    Not unto us, O Lord!
The Praise or Glory be
    Of any deed or word;
For in Thy Judgment lies
To crown or bring to nought
All knowledge or device
That Man has reached or wrought.

And we confess our blame—
How all too high we hold
That noise which men call Fame,
That dross which men call Gold.
For these we undergo
    Our hot and godless days,
But in our hearts we know
    Not unto us the Praise.

O Power by Whom we live—
    Creator, Judge, and Friend,
Upholdingly forgive
Nor fail us at the end:
But grant us well to see
    In all our piteous ways—
Non nobis Domine!
    Not unto us the Praise!

by Rudyard Kipling from “The Pageant of Parliament,” 1934

Originally possible connection with psalm 115.

Hi
Went to the Hewitt. i am so old I can't rember the dates!!
Was one of the first pupils to walk through the doors. If I remember correctly, there were 300 boys and 30 girls from the Art School. Great!! Doc Richards was our geography master and one of the best teachers I ever had. He treated us as adults when we reached the 6th form. He used to meet up with us at the pub on Friday night. I went out with Jack Adams daughter for a while - don't think he liked it much as he clouted me round the head in front of hundred for being late for a football match. Great days.

Regards
Glayva
