The earlier reference in the thread was Ber Street not King Street, sorry for the mix up.
I haven't looked recently but I think there is also one over a a terraced house door at the Brunswick Road end of Newmarket Street. I'll nip round sometime and check.

I remember this gnome/goblin/green man very well. There are a few dotted around Norwich. I'm no expert but I think they are normally used as door or window keystones (mascarons). I think they are moulded rather than carved.
As someone in the thread mentions there is one on King Street just off Rose Lane in position over a door.

Look at the comments underneath the photo as Moominpappa06 has posted a photo of the whole door.
I do have a slide in the attic of the one on Castle Meadow taken in the 70s. I'll see if I can find it.
Cheers

leoL30, you are a star. I walked up to it once anmd it looked carved to me, but what the heck , I f we have a photo, we can make a new one, especially since the shadow of the old one still give's us an inkling as to the original size.
Does Archant want to sponsor a new Goblin for Castle meadow? or anybody else for that matter, I'll be up for carving one. A nice bit of honey coloured Ketton lime stone, or Bath/ Derby stone would do the job justice. nevermind

What the heck, they had two days to think about it. If you would like to get in touch Leol30, I will carve it anyway, I have already taken a copy of the shadow on the wall and I have got some suitable stone.
Let me know via private email, I will check it out daily, for a week.nevermind

Well it might be worth a donation, but oughtn't there to be some kind of public move to place it in a prominent position in the city and then give it an historical reason to be there?

Thats a brilliant offer Nevermind. Hope that Leo can find the slide - I'm sure that 30 odd years of accumulated clutter may take a bit of sorting through " src="/cs/emoticons/emotion-1.gif">.
Do you reckon that your carving could have a mould taken? I'm a bit concerned that after your hard work, some thieving scallywag will lift it, then we would be back to square one. If we could replace it with a plaster or composite material, at least it wouldn't be disasterous - you may even be able to flog some to the museum...

Hi Kenneth,
My feeling is that as we haven't been able to track down any history, then it would be nice just to restore a copy to the original location, and let future generations discover it, wonder about its origin, and maybe do some hopefully successful research. I love the idea of interesting objects in obscure places, it just adds to the charm and character of places like Norwich. There may have been no reason at all for why it was there, could be someone thought that the wall needed some decoration... Hopefully we may find out someday.

Absolutely right strawman, all we will be doing is restoring the same piece for the same piece, yes we can make a mould and plaster/composite cast.
Now to the good news. I had a phone call from a certain fan of Norfolk yesterday afternoon. She has pledged a donation that will pay for the stone, as yet I will keep her name for myself until it is finalised, but that was my first long distance commission and we have to publish a photo of the finished item on here when it is done.
Should the museum like a copy, or wants to sell casts, that can be discussed.
As soon as it is ready I let you all know and we can have a public instalment, take a few shots and put it up online for all to see. nevermind

I've been asking people if they remember the sculpture and a few people looked vacant and said that they vaguely remember something..

I 've been inside Shire Halls regimental museum and nobody over there knew anything about it, but someone else inquiered some weeks ago about it. The manager kindly walked out with me as he did not knew about it, he does now. One possibility would be the Counties record office so they say, so thats my next stop. nevermind

Could just be one of many pagan carvings of old nevermind.
Churches are covered in them.
Of course officials knew little about them and still don't.
