No, they might never have had Major who miraculously won the next election for them . . . silly old Tories. Even they knew the mad old bat was a liability.

Yes, she can certainly still provoke a remark or two!!! But i think any supporter of Margaret Thatcher obviously didn't suffer themselves, from her hateful policies and her "No such thing as society" approach. The greed and selfishness that is around now all stems from her time in power. Still we will get more of the same at the next election when the gullible public vote in Cameron. Also the reason some people in their thirtys are living at home is because the wages are too low for them to buy a house and Maggie sold off the council houses and put the money into central government. Have you actually seen the price to rent a bedsit let alone a flat if you live in Norwich? On minimum wage it is virtually impossible to afford.
P.S. Message to Darcy, probably throwing myself to the wolves by this but ..............See you 6pm Trafalger Square!!!!!!!!!!!!

Trafalgar square? I'll be there! The woman banged on about the free market, then gave away council houses for buttons thus distorting the housing market. Sold the utilities under the banner of "people's capitalism", now the utilities are owned by Johnnie Foreigner. Her policies have led to the absurd situation of much of Britain's water supply now used as a cash cow to shore up the pension funds of some Commonwealth countries.
Let this stupid woman rot in hell.

At least you knew where you were with Mrs Thatcher, she's better than any of the sorry excuses that have followed her.
Daftest thing the tories ever did getting rid of her.I bet they wish they hadn't.

Yes, I knew where I was with Thatcher. She was not a Tory. She and her cronies Keith Joseph, Tebbit etc, latched on to that once proud, honest party the same way Blair has used Labour. Major turned it around. The economy was recovering by '97. If Major's premiership had continued then we'll be in better shape today. Still, the GB Public thought they needed change for changes sake.

She should, absolutely. What 'leaders' have we had since, who could stand up for their convictions instead of lying to the populace in attempts to be popular. Who else has made even an attempt to stand up to european interests and tried to get a better deal for us. Every 'leader' since has decimated our armed forces. She had the determination to take on the unions (power cuts, three day week, rubbish in the streets, unburied bodies....), whose policies at the time were the 'me, me, me' that someone quoted earlier. She did not create this attitude, it was already there. She reformed the country's economy from nearly bankrupt (the sick man of europe, if I remember correctly) with huge interest rates, to one that was envied, and many of her reforms have been copied by other countries successfully. Her policies opened up higher education to a much wider segment of the population.
She wasn't perfect (who is?), but she was better than any since.

If my memory serves me right, Didn't she preside over a reduction in the rate of increase of defence spending after the Falklands war while enjoying the reputation of being "The Iron Lady"?

Mrs.Thatcher deserves the best, whether it be a state or private funeral. She dragged this country from its knees. She said what she was going to do and she did it.Men went to war, yes, but they were fully equiped for the job.She got the better of the powerful Unions and brought in competitive tendering which brought the spend, spend Councils to heel.Yes she gave the people he choice to buy their council homes, but I didn't hear anyone squeal when they re-sold them at a huge profit. If people think that privatising is any worse than Nationalising industry are in cloud cuckoo land.I remember when people had their businesses snatched from them for peanuts by the labour government. It will certainly take someone of her courage to turn this country round again after this spend, spend tax and borrow government are thrown out.I just hope that Brown,Blair & co.keep well away.John

My thoughts on selling off social housing, it just shouldn't have happened. She also put peole on"their knees"....3 million unemployed. Loss of British industry.abolishment of lower wage council. High redundancies (with capped payouts). High home repossessions. The list is endless. But i will say something that is wonderful about Thatcher, and that is how there is a clear love/hate thing about her. Her name always provoke passionate responses.
P.S Try and catch the repeat of 8 out of 10 cats channel four to hear the pannels view on a state funeral!!
Also in answer to the question earlier on in the thread who would i be voting for in the next election.........I really don't know but it certainly will not be an ex P.R man from Eton!

Perhaps Rose you have forgotten Labours pledge to the people. They were going to get rid of all the quango's and put the railways back in the public domain.Where in fact they have almost doubled the amount of unelected quango's and the railways, water.gas, electricity pushed into the background.I also remember New Labour criticising the Conservatives when they thought that National Lottery money was going to be used for the N.H.S. What a joke, they are using the lottery as a second income to spend as they like.Does stadiums come to mind? As far as council housing is concerned, the reason a lot of them were sold off was because they had fallen into such a poor state of repair due to lack of maintainance and they were not a viable proposition to repair and modernise.I worked on the council for many years and watched as money was literally thrown down the drain.John
