For many years it has been accepted practice to reward non attenders, those who hide behind the label of ADD when in fact they are just plain disobedient and badly brought up, the aggressive and disruptive, the spoilt- you name it- with treats, outings, fancy recordings studios where they can mess about playing at being musicians when not one of them has the determination to learn a few bars of music, skate parks etc and on and on. From the basic level of house point rewards up to treats at Alton Towers the pains in the ar$es get the treats and the kids who toe  the line, no matter what problems they have to overcome at home or with deficits of intellect- well they don't cause problems so they can be ignored. I have yet to encounter a school  that rewards the efforts of its hard working mid stream to top stream kids in the same way that it spoils those that cause them problems. It seems the police have the same attitude too. If these kids had caused a public nuisance on previous Hallowe'ens then they should have been served with orders to report for some form of community service on 31st October    Report

It was applied to the backside six times in rapid succession. Worked every time. Anyone else remember 'Sammy' Hesketh?. WDC and its caravan site.    Report

On the "leafleting" cover- I had one through my door recently saying someone would be calling back later if I was interested in selling gold, silver or antiques yeah right as if...especially as I remember the scams in the 60s and 70s So I sent off an e mail to the safer neighbourhood team suggesting they might like to get on the tails of these gits No reply of course. By why can't we put a stop to all these people traipsing up to the door just as they please without householders having to put up fences and locked gates- who in their right mind wants a traveller gang offering plastic installation/driveways/tree felling or even blasted Lidl leaflets come to that. It is used so often as a cover to rob the elderly it is time it was made an offence.    Report

Still they can (and probably) do say they have had no reports of any problems and presumably claim,to anyone daft enough to believe it,that means they are doing a good job.   WDC and its caravan site.    Report

04/11/2009, 8:34 AM thelibrarian Joined on 27/08/2009 Posts 392 Re: Norfolk police treat troublemakers to a day at Alton Towers for those who didn't read the link it was about gangs of blokes breaking into or pushing their way into the homes of the elderly and vulnerable in the "wild west" of the region and the police in West Norfolk and east Cambs/Fenland instigating an urgent attempt to round up the perps before someone got killed. The men  were believed to be operating under the cover of leafleting ( presumably for a bogus enterprise) Good cover that- print off a collecting clothes for poor dear kids in Romania  leaflet on a scrap of paper and away they go checking out properties unchallenged. I wonder if anyone here has seen a CPSO challenging any one door knocking or leafleting?    Report

At the rate they are delivered, currently around once every 2 weeks, it does make one wonder when the battered old unsignwritten van calls to collect if its a front for other purposes. It was suggested by local authority that collecting bags without a UK charity number thereon are scams. On the subject of the £1000 or so spent on known local offenders from Yarmouth, I know 56 well behaved kids that should have been rewarded rather than rewarding those who show constant disrespect to others and the law. Insetad, they should have been put on notice that they would be dealt with severely if they caused problems.    Report

I refuse to use any plastic bag put on my doorstep or in my letter box on the principle that it is just more uninvited rubbish, worthy cause or not. They make good bin liners. Decent stuff  I wish to dispose of ( not much of that, if it's good enough for someone else it should be good enough for me) goes to a pal to "car- boot" or direct to a charity shop and tatty stuff gets used to wash windows and cars and the cat's bed gets old sweaters. I am not anti charity but resent being hustled/hassled on my doorstep    Report

A day some years ago was a surprise, nice lunch at Colkirk, Autumn day, fire glowing. Both of us snoozing at about 5pm.. Bang on the door and a chap tried to sell Mrs E a big bag full of power tools. She refused his attentions, and when I woke , all went foul . "You dozy bitch" was the politest way of  describing the language of the seller as he headed off. ce    Report

09/11/2009, 2:58 PM Kizzy Joined on 13/05/2007 Posts 341 Re: Norfolk police treat troublemakers to a day at Alton Towers I use them for bin liners too.  They come so frequently now that I don't even check them anymore.   Some time back I used to and most of them were scams.  One giveaway is that alongside clothes, they also ask for "perfumes, gifts, toiletries etc." Same as the romanians who sell the "pencil sketches" at the door.  Most of these are photocopies if you look closely.  If you don't mind paying a tenner for a photocopy then that's up to you though! I had one of these people on my door and felt very uncomfortable because he very nearly tried to come in and his eyes were darting past me and into the house.  I full expected to be burgled a few days later.     Report
