So do I , but I also want to see all those car show rooms and offices beside the ring road obliged to turn their lights off too- surely they can have security alarms that don't need light?

Exactly CC, if plunged into darkness, how long do the powers that be think it will be before those so called quiet residential streets in low crime areas become anything but?
The idea can be best described as ill thought out, if one wants to be diplomatic, plain stupid if diplomacy is not your thing.

great idea and I agree with Librarian, commercial lights should as well be switched off. Energy producers say that this is going to hurt their turbines as they have to run at certain speeds and can't be switched off, tec. etc.
Hopefully, it will mean that large public building, like our greenfield hospital with failry flat stainless steel roofs, invest in solar capacities. Studies show that they could have saved 90k of their anual electricity bill, equally the modern Forum, apparently groundbreaking architecture, it as well could have been equipped with alternatives.
I made these recommendations, as well as others, in the design stages and was laughed out of the door. nevermind

I wonder just how much difference lights make to being mugged or burgled or raped? There seems to be plenty still going on in these days of lights everywhere. No point having a security light on your house if it is plain that no one is at home, all it does is make it easier to see to burgle. Street lights didn't help the lady in GY ( reported in yesterdays EDP) from being burgled while she slept but a good loud old dog might have done. Street lights make it easier to get about in the dark, and I admit make it easier to see unsavoury characters- but does it make it any easier to get out of the way of them?

I think this half-baked idea stands no chance of success unless ALL unsavoury characters are banned from streets after dark
so
who's going to DEFINE 'unsavoury characters'
aha
step forward
Alan Johnson and...
... after yesterday's intemperate remarks about cuttin' and runnin' from Afghanistan and using the money thus saved to 'step up surveillance' of.... unsavoury characters here in Blighty...
...Kim Howell MP
remember, if Charles Clarke had had his way, we'd now be living in a society with 90 detention without charge
lights? we don't need to worry about energy bills and climate change any more... now that a Cherman consortium has finalised details with Maghrebian Heads of State to harvest the power of the sun and send it to us, in needy Eurp
Bless
leaving the Dark Coninent
in the dark
where unsavoury characters roam at will

On mentioning the Forum - I wish it was possible to rebuild this dinosaur of a building! It is so 20th century to rely on air-conditioning in a poorly insulated building. The Forum is cold in winter and sweltering in summer. The air conditioning carries illness - it seems a few days after each time I visit the Library I have a cold! I hardly go in there now as I prefer to avoid colds!
If the Forum was designed in recent years it would fail the building regulations. Modern buildings are eco-friendly with loads of insulation and do not need air-conditioning.

If you want to cut down on UK energy consumption , just throttle the flow of population increase now hitting 400 000 every year, mostly from abroad and the birth of children from that influx, Or is that too simple? Racist ! Racist ! Oh put a sock in it will you .
