Evacuees of 1939
During the second world war, almost three million children were moved to the countryside between 1939 and 1945. The government's scheme to evacuate priority people from London and other major cities began on September 1, 1939, under the codename of Operation Pied Piper.
Sixty years on - stories from the EDP, September 1, 2009:
Evacuees re-live wartime memories 70 years on
John Fosbueary: They treated me like their own
Barbara Murphy: I enjoyed Norfolk so much I didn't want to go home
Doris Hanscombe: I still can't wave goodbye at a railway station
If you have memories of being an evacuee, growing up with them or tales from your family, please share them here.
