Freeman/Shimmens families of Norwich
|
|
|
|
|
Hi, I am descended from Elizabeth Freeman (b.1878, Norwich). Her parents were James Freeman and Sarah Shimmens and she had at least 6 brothers and 3 sisters. I've got lots of information on the Freemans and am in contact with several people looking at the same family, but I don't have much information on the Shimmens.
I would like to hear from anyone who has any information on either the Shimmens family or the Freemans and would be happy to share what information I've got.
Many thanks

That sounds just right. Sarah's father was Charles, a weaver, according to her marriage certificate - she married 25th September 1862. On the 1861 census, I've found
Charles Shimmens, head, 58, silk weaver Ann Shimmens, wife, 57, silk weaver Charlotte Shimmens, dau 24, charwoman Robert Shimmens, son, 14, scholar Residence: Chapel Street, Lakenham
but I couldn't find Sarah on the 1861 census
Matty - are you related to this family?
Many thanks for your information

Sorry Bella, they are not my family. Just been doing genealogy a long time.
Try http://www.noah.norfolk.gov.uk/QSearch.aspx
The directories section has several entries for SHIMMENS. He was not only a grocer, he also ran a beerhouse.
I cannot find any wills for SHIMMENS in the Probate section but they are on line only from 1800 - 1858.
