Re: winterton on sea coastal battery in ww2
Cannot tell you too much about that side of things , but I recall whilst serving in the R,N. just after WW2 when I was talking to a mate who told me the following when he found out that I came from Norfork.     His ship was sunk of the coast In mid winter, and he was struggling with some wreckage for ages to keep afloat.  It was in the hours of darkness when he felt the sand beneath his feet.   He clambered over various obstacles including barbed wire over the sand dunes until he saw some buildings..  He staggered up to them frozen to the bone and banged on the door of one.  After a while an irate chap opened the the door and asked what he wanted !   He explained where he had come from and was taken in to the warmth and made comfortable by the residents.   But he said the people couldn! beleive that he had came the the way he did as he had apparantly been staggering through a minefield !     He said it was a swim he would never forget....or the name Winterton !.
