Twittering on about Lowestoft - and why not

Last season I followed Lowestoft Town in the FA Vase from Crown Meadow, to Canvey Island and Whitley Bay, all the way to Wembley – and history might just be about to repeat itself.

The game I covered on Saturday, against Hungerford Town in the fifth round, had absolutely everything. Two red cards, one hat-trick, a missed penalty and extra-time – and speaking to joint-manager Micky Chapman, it was clearly an emotional occasion.

The man is as Blue as they come, and following the death of his grandmother last week – from whom Micky got his Crown Meadow allegiance – I’m sure Saturday’s result was as much for her as the Lowestoft squad.

A quarter-final against Bideford is next, at Crown Meadow on February 28, with the propect of a two-legged semi-final awaiting the winner, which could mean Lowestoft reach Wembley by playing only one other time away from Crown Meadow in this year's competition.

Jon and I already have Town down to come up against Whitley Bay before the Vase climax – you may recall the northerners lost their semi-final first leg on the east coast 4-0 last season, before finding themselves 3-0 up after 20 minutes in the second leg. Somehow they couldn’t find the vital goal they needed, the Trawler Boys went to Wembley and the rest is history.

But Whitley will not have forgotten those events last spring – and I bet they would love the chance to avenge their defeat.

Saturday also saw me delve into the wonders of Twitter to report what was happening at Crown Meadow for the Pinkun.

After some initial head-scratching, I’ve become rather partial to the site. In effect, all you do is regularly answer the question ‘what are you doing?’ with a text message-sized reply. Those who want to follow you can, while you can follow what others are saying.

To see what I posted from my phone on Saturday, visit the Pinkun tweets and scroll down to February 14.

With the Pinkun, BBCsport, Stephen Fry et al getting involved, I can see it becoming quite the journalistic – and social – tool.

(Should anyone care, I have my own feed too – visit my tweets But go easy!)
