Reclaiming the land

"In the longer term, if we can't sustain wildlife where it is now, we need to move it where it can survive and flourish."

This is the view of Clive Doarks, Conservation Officer for the Broads at English Nature. The RSPB has a strategy to acquire land to restore vulnerable habitat sites, especially freshwater sites at risk from sea inundation. This is in progress at Lakenheath Fen, where a carrot field has been flooded, and reedbeds recreated.

Jon Haw, Regional Reserves Manager for the RSPB explained: "Reserves supporting bitterns are in danger of sea level rise, and we need to ensure that we create banks away from this risk."
