The A47 is to be closed this weekend so engineers can start work which will see new water tanks installed to tackle flooding which has plagued a section of the route.

The road to the west of Norwich, between Easton and Honingham, has flooded at least eight times since last October.

The problem forced the road to be shut on two occasions, or for drivers to have to negotiate potentially dangerous water.

On Sunday, the road will be fully closed overnight from 8pm to 6am for the start of work which highway bosses hope will solve the problem.

National Highways - the government company responsible for the road - is planning to install underground tanks to collect the water and allow it to be released in a controlled way.

Previously scheduled work last month had to be cancelled because of supply problems with the tanks, but the work this weekend will see concrete bases laid for when they do arrive.

A signposted diversion will be in place.

National Highways previously had to bring in pumps to clear the water lapping on the A47.

The organisation launched investigations to establish the cause of the problem, which people living nearby said were new to that section of the A47.

They had hoped fixing a broken pipe and the construction of a soil bank would prevent further incidents, but the road continued to flood.

The flooding issues coincided with National Highways' preparatory work on the A47, ahead of dualling the road between Easton and North Tuddenham, but the company has insisted that did not cause the problems.

There will also be further work done on Norwich Road in Honingham.

That road will be shut between the Mattishall Lane junction in Honingham and the Honingham roundabout overnight (8pm to 6am) from Thursday, May 23 to Friday, May 24.

A diversion will be in place via Berrys Lane.
